Claustra

 

The claustra that characterize the appearance of the residences are a special element of Mediterranean architecture since ancient times. The forms in which they occur in places and through the centuries are many, however the timelessness of the element is due to its close connection with the climatic conditions of the region, but also with the cultural characteristics of its peoples.

Filtering the strong, corrosive light of the Mediterranean region, the large, perforated surfaces created by the claustra provide shade and coolness while allowing the circulation of the air, which passes through the gaps like a light breeze.

At the same time, the movement of the shadings throughout the day gives the interior of the building a natural rhythm. In this way, the repeated pattern of the openings created by the claustra catalyzes the boundaries between the outside and the inside, creating at the same time a connection with the natural environment, but also a feeling of security and privacy, through the ability to see without becoming visible.

Simplicity, strong geometry, and simple lines are among the first elements that are noticed in these residences. The Mediterranean architecture, the sand color of the walls, the large openings, as well as the choice of plants (succulents, reeds, and cypresses) in the exterior areas of the residences, fully harmonize the building with the natural landscape. The use of materials and techniques, such as claustra, forged cement, marble, wood, and clay further enhance the reconciliation of the surrounding space with the residences.

In this way, borrowing elements of the environment, the residences harmonize with the natural landscape, while this harmony translates into the feeling of relaxation and peace that one can enjoy while staying in them.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Privacy

Privacy is defined through the distinctive lines of the residences that delimit the elements of the surrounding space, but also the elegant luxury of the interior, where tradition, nature, and modern comfort coexist harmoniously. Consistent with the philosophy of harmonizing with the natural landscape as well as a sense of privacy, the residences offer unobstructed views of the sea, while all have their own garden and private pool.

Forged cement

Forged cement is a traditional technique of Mediterranean architecture. Intertwined both with the architectural tradition of Greece and with the modern trend for spaces more friendly to people and the environment, this technique gives a unique style and timeless simplicity to the space.

It is a mixture of materials that does not include cement, but theraic earth (ground pozzolan), ceramic flour, quartz sand and quicklime. It was particularly well known on the islands, and especially in the Cyclades. During its application, the craftsman pressed it using the trowel, hence its name. It is placed in a very thin layer as a final surface and decorations for the respective space, while, initially, it was applied in auxiliary spaces, in professional and spaces with high waterproofing requirements, but also for beautification of stairs and hayats.

In the residences in the Paradeisos area, all surfaces are covered with forged cement, creating a homogeneous and continuous space, while the claustra frame it decoratively.

Claustra

Claustra, known since antiquity, can be used to close large openings, but also to separate large single spaces. They are a shading system, particularly popular in the Mediterranean region, as it reduces the entry of intense solar radiation, while at the same time creating a special atmosphere inside the buildings as the light is filtered through the selected patterns. Claustra limit the visual contact of the interior from the outside, achieving the desired degree of privacy protection.
